Joe Alterman is an Atlanta-born jazz pianist and composer known for his joyful, hard-swinging style and deep connection to the jazz tradition. Praised by legends including Ahmad Jamal, Les McCann, and Ramsey Lewis, Alterman has carved out a distinctive voice rooted in groove, blues, and exuberant swing.

A graduate of New York University, he has performed at major venues such as the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland, and Blue Note, sharing the stage with artists including Houston Person, Les McCann, and Ramsey Lewis. DownBeat describes his playing as “hard-swinging,” while Nat Hentoff wrote that his music makes people smile—and dance.

Alterman has released eight critically acclaimed albums, including Joe Alterman Plays Les McCann: Big Mo & Little Joe(2023). Whether leading his trio or performing solo, he delivers music that is timeless, infectious, and full of heart—keeping the spirit of swing vibrantly alive.
