Among the classical repertoire greats, Franz Schubert was one of the most prolific composers of piano duets and works for four hands. Pianist Mitsuko Uchida—one of the world’s top Schubert interpreters—welcomes fellow pianist Jonathan Biss in an enlightening all-Schubert exploration. The Allegro in A Minor is an intense piece whose approachable, lyrical nature disguises its great challenges, while the Rondo in A Major is a particularly pleasant work, considered a crowning achievement of four-hands piano writing. Featured in its Carnegie Hall premiere is Schubert’s somber and sonically rich Grande Marche No. 5. The program closes with a substantial and rarely performed work: the Divertissement à la hongroise.
