Revival Romanticism: Oboe, Viola and Piano Trio at Klavierhaus

Although the oboe was often entrusted with orchestral parts, the instrument was ignored by the majority of renowned composers of the 19th century period, or even 20th century. In the 21st century, artists are not only capable of exquisite techniques and artistry, classical musicians should have forward thinking for the current music world. To create refreshing imagination and unlock more potential for oboe literature. The concert oboist, Virginia ChangChien recreates series of Romanticism works, and programming as a concert series of “Revival Romanticism”, we sincerely invite you to discover lyrical sound and beautiful dialogue between oboe, viola and piano.

New-York based pianist, Daniel Colalillo and violist Jiwon April Kim will be collaborating oboist Virginia ChangChien for featuring duo and chamber works by transcribing Schumann and Beethoven’s works, along with a trio work for oboe, viola and piano by German composer August Klughardt, whose music was deeply influenced by Robert Schumann.

Artist Virginia ChangChien (Oboe) Virginia enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and educator. She has performed numerous concerts in significant venues, such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, UN and United States Capitol. Her solo performance has gained acclaim as ” lryical and thoughtful flow” by music critics “The Glass” and “Soundwordsight”. Among Virginia’s career highlights, she was invited as music residency at Banff Centre, Canada and a guest artist at Eleazar de Carvalho Festival in Brazil. After her Carnegie Hall debut , she was commissioned by New York Composer Circle to premiere contemporary works. In 2017, she released an EP featuring contemporary solo work for oboe and her first album “Oboist: Virginia ChangChien” featuring works of Marcello, Schumann and Ravel, label by MEII Enterprise INC, NYC. In the past seasons, she has been invtied to Bear Valley Festival and collborated with reconginzed artists including Olga Kern, Michael Mogan, Kelly Hall-Tompkins, Inva Mula and Ryo Goto. Recently, she is a music director of “Phantasy Trio”. The debut concert received favorable reviews. As a seasoned orchestral player, other appearances include with the United Nations Symphony Orchestra, Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra, UN woodwind quintet, the Ureuk Symphony, Bergen Symphony Orchestra and La Jolla Symphony. She received a Master’s degree at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queen College (CUNY). Her mentors include Humbert Lucarelli , Gordon Hunt, Washington Barella, and Sarah Skuster.

Artist Jiwon April Kim (Viola) An avid chamber musician and new music performer, Jiwon has appeared at venues including Carnegie Hall, Elbphilharmonie, Lincoln Center, Spectrum, and National Sawdust. Her world premiere performance of Roberto Sierra’s Duo Concertante for violin and viola as part of Summergarden series at the Museum of Modern Art in 2014 was reviewed by The New York Times and New York Classical Review as “high-energy” and “high quality.” She has worked with celebrated conductors such as the late James DePreist, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Alan Gilbert, and Robert Spano. She also has participated in masterclasses by James Ehnes, Garth Knox, Tokyo String Quartet, Anner Bylsma, and Joseph Silverstein at international summer music festivals. Jiwon has performed at Lucerne Festival Academy, Toronto Summer Music Festival, and New Music for Strings Festival as principal violist. In the past seasons, she has been invited to Banff Chamber Music Residency and Starry Nights Chamber Music Series. Jiwon April Kim has received Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School where she studied with Prof. Hyo Kang and Dr. I-Hao Lee. She received Doctoral degree from Stony Brook University studying under Emerson String Quartet, Jennifer Frautschi, and Nicholas Cords.

Artist Daniel Colalillo (Piano) A highly regarded classical pianist based in New York City. He is renowned for delivering powerful and distinctive performances with a high level of musical integrity. He has received critical acclaim from “The New York Times” and has established himself as a sought-after soloist. He has given solo recitals at prominent venues such as Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, Bargemusic, Symphony Space, Columbia University, Princeton University, and has performed in several cities including Philadelphia, San Francisco, Nashville, Toronto, Montreal, and more. Daniel also serves as the Artistic Director of “Classical Keys,” a concert series held in Morristown, NJ and NYC where he actively performs chamber music. As a dedicated educator, he operates his own private studio and was awarded “Top Piano Teacher” by Steinway & Sons in 2022. Recently, he became a Musician Owner and serves on the Council of “Groupmuse,” a series of chamber music house concerts in the US and abroad. Daniel graduated with a Master of Music from Mannes College: The New School for Music.
