Alban Berg and Maurice Ravel saw the front lines of the Great War first hand, as did Guillaume Apollinaire, the poet for Francis Poulenc’s Banalités. Charles Ives’ Songs of War reflect on a conflict an ocean away, while Enrique Grandados’ career was cut tragically short by a German U-Boat.
