DESCRIPTION:Nearly sixty years after moving to the United States from Kingston\, Jamaica\, his hometown\, Grammy nominated pianist Monty Alexander is an American music master.  Among the jazz music cognoscenti he is considered one of the very best to ever practice the art form.  In the book\, The Fifty Greatest Jazz Piano Players of All Time (Hal Leonard Publishing)\, he is cited as the 5th greatest pianist in jazz history. \nDocumented on more than 75 recordings\, Monty Alexander has toured with many of the most important names in jazz music\, including Clark Terry\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Milt Jackson\, Ray Brown\, & Randy Weston.  And he has led some of the most outstanding piano trios and groups in jazz music\, and has been a pioneer in the fusion of Jamaican Music popularly known as Reaggae and modern jazz music. \nAs a band leader he has been touring the world relentlessly with various projects since the 1960’s\, delighting a global audience drawn to his vibrant personality and soulful message. These will be heard alongside the original\, less familiar version of Gregorio Allegri’s haunting Miserere\, a work strictly guarded by the Vatican until Mozart transcribed it from memory as a child; J. S. After opening with Mozart’s somber Masonic Funeral Music in C minor\, Program Seven\, “Beauty\, Charity\, and Reason\,” complements Michael Haydn’s Mass with two of Mozart’s own religious choral works\, both of which draw on his devotion to Freemasonry. Scored for male voices and orchestra\, the cantata Laut verkünde unsre Freude was written for the dedication of a Masonic temple and represents Mozart’s last completed work. Born in Little Haiti Miami\, Florida\, in 1983 he began playing piano at the age of ten and quickly showed a natural talent for music. As a young man he would go on to study with south Florida legends such as John McMinn\, Melton Mustafa\, Christopher Dorsey. After graduating high school\, he would go on to attend a higher education at Florida A&M University\, where he would be able to study and play with musicians such as Marty Robinson\, Longineu Parsons\, Leon Andersen\, Rodney Jordan and more. This would be the time when he founded his band Willerm Delisfort Project. Later on after his time in Tallahassee\, FL he moved on to the Chicago area to attend Northern Illinois University\, where he went on to study with the great Willie Pickens\, and Ronald Carter who truly inspired him to want to be a great educator in music. This would lead him on a path where he would work with some of Chicago’s greats such as Von & George Freeman\, Ernest Dawkins\, AACM\, Fareed Haque\, Bobby Broom. Also with some of Chicago’s young lions on the come up such as Marquis Hill\, Christopher McBride\, Corey Wilkes\, Maurice Brown\, Milton Suggs\, MaKaya McCraven\, Junius Paul and so many more. After 3 years of working in the great city Chicago\, he would go on to move to New York city where he is based right now. \nDelisfort\, as a leader\, has released two albums: Freedom Riders (2009) and Black Element(s) (2023). On many other projects as a sideman has also been featured on albums by other artists\, such as Wayne Tucker\, Dezron Douglas\, Nickel & Dime Ops\, Chris Davis\, Chris Massey\, Ernest Dawkins (Organ & Piano)\, Fareed Haque\, Milton Suggs\, Jason Marshall (Organ)\, Patrick Terbrack and more.. \nAs a composer and arranger\, since the age of 16\, his penmanship has written over 7 suites\, more than 80 compositions & arrangements; you can find the peers of his generation and younger performing on records and club dates til this day. Delisfort believes that his compositions are his way to express the multitudes of hurdles we deal with in life everyday\, and simply hopes his melodies\, lyrics and harmonies resonate with others to bring awareness\, love\, discussion\, understanding\, empathy and more to everyone’s life. \nIn addition to his musical career\, Delisfort is also active in many communities. A teaching artist at Jazz at Lincoln Center\, educating and molding the next generation in jazz with their High School Jazz Academy. DESCRIPTION:Mozart was commissioned to write The Abduction from the Seraglio (“Die Entführung aus dem Serail”) by Joseph II\, who hoped to promote a German-language National Singspiel to rival Italian opera. An immediate success at its premiere\, the work established Mozart’s reputation and remained one of the greatest successes of his career. The Abduction is the story of a Spanish nobleman and his fiancée. She and their two servants have been kidnapped by pirates and sold into the harem of a Turkish Pasha. Using intrigue and disguises to outwit their overseer\, the lovers plot an escape. However\, it is only when the pasha reveals unexpected nobility\, choosing mercy over revenge\, that the four regain their freedom. This story reflects the fascination that Turkey held for Mozart and his Viennese contemporaries\, for whom the Ottoman Empire was not only a key cultural influence but also—in the long shadow of the Ottoman–Habsburg wars—a remembered military threat. Imagining the Ottoman world through Western eyes\, the work is imbued with Orientalism\, from Mozart’s approximation of Turkish music\, loosely based on that of the famous Janissary marching bands\, to exoticized characters like the buffoonishly brutal overseer. Yet the opera also complicates such stereotypes: the pasha’s final act of clemency gave Viennese audiences an Enlightenment lesson\, presenting virtue as a universal trait and using the imagined East to critique Western cruelty. With its emphasis on historical scholarship and ability to provide a “rich web of context” (The New York Times)\, Bard is uniquely well-placed to explore these contradictions\, when Botstein\, the ASO\, and the Bard Festival Chorale take part in a semi-staged concert performance of the opera. DESCRIPTION:This concert is the culmination of a 10-day residency at I-Park’s artists’ retreat in Connecticut. In this intimate setting\, the participants will share ideas as they workshop six new works for their world premieres. The residency pairs a high-profile ensemble with six composers. Benefits for the composers: hearing their music refined and reimagined in real time\, candid dialogue and artistic risk-taking. And somewhat uniquely\, an assurance from the ensemble that the new works will have an impactful performance lifespan beyond the premiere. \nThis year’s ensemble-in-residence is Latitude 49. This six-musician Canadian-American group consists of piano\, percussion\, violin\, cello\, clarinet and saxophone.
